Men's Fashion Questions Answered

THE LEATHER JACKET Brando wore it well; so can you.
Q: I’m pretty dedicated to the Levi’s 511 jean. I’ve not encountered anything close in terms of price-to-awesomeness ratio. Are there others I should check out?—Drew Toal, TONY staffer
A: “You can’t get more classic and affordable than Levi’s, but if you want a pair of great-fitting jeans at a reasonable price that is sure to hit the fall trends, check out the Topman store (478 Broadway between Broome and Grand Sts, topman.com): it has a great denim selection. For loyal Levi’s customers, do not miss Robert Geller’s new collaboration with the denim staple in stores (Levi’s and Bloomingdale’s) this fall; the jeans look amazing.”—Matt Kays, publicist for Showroom Seven
A: “Dedication is a good thing. This is how most guys shop. They find something that works and wear it for years. There are similar options out there, though: A.P.C.’s Cure fit, Uniqlo’s slim fit and, of course, J.Crew’s 484 fit.”—Jack O’Connor, head men’s stylist for J.Crew
A: I’m always in favor of fashion experimentation. Otherwise, we get stuck in a rut. I, too, share your love of Levi’s 511’s, but I also love my jeans from J.Crew, Claiborne by John Bartlett, DKNY Jeans and Lucky Brand. Go out on a trying-on mission. I believe that you’ll get excited about new options.—Tim Gunn, chief creative officer of Liz Claiborne Inc. and Project Runway host and mentor

Q: I have some cowboy boots, but they don’t jive with my skinny jeans so much. I’m not tucking them in, because then I’d look like more of a buffoon than I already do wearing cowboy boots in the city. What do I do? I hate bootcut jeans.—Drew Toal
A: Ditch the cowboy boots. For a fall boot go with an updated army or motorcycle style or a classic Dr. Martens. Leaving them slightly loose and letting the bottom of your jean sit on top solves the problem of tucking your jeans in or wearing a bootcut.—Matt Kays
A: Here’s a secret—you can keep your old jeans and just take a thick rubber band to each boot way high up on your ankle to keep them from protruding.—Chuck Guarino, designer for THECAST
A: I’m not a fan of bootcut jeans, either, because they have too much volume (and I have a refrain: The more volume your clothes have, the more volume you appear to have). I have a pair of motorcycle boots that I’m very fond of and wear a lot. I have no difficulty fitting them inside a pair of straight-leg jeans, even on the skinnier-but-not-too-skinny side.—Tim Gunn

Q: I am a size 32-by-34. I haven’t found any stores that cater to tall, lanky men. Where can I buy pants?—Christopher Schonberger, TONY staffer
A: Cheap Monday is great for tall skinny guys. Their styles are modern and clean and they are super affordable. INVEN.TORY (237 Lafayette St between Prince and Spring Sts, 212-226-5292) is the only store in NY that carries the entire Cheap Monday collection, and you can get them for a great price ($65).—Matt Kays
A: For denim, definitely check out A.P.C., as they have different leg lengths. For tailored trousers, it might be worth going to a bespoke tailor—like Wilfred’s Tailoring (20 W 23rd St between Fifth and Sixth Aves, 212-242-3030), for example—and getting some classic grey lightweight wool flat-front trousers made (from $300). They are something you should always have in your wardrobe and the experience of having bespoke clothes made for you is definitely one thing you should do in your life.—Cuan Hanly, creative director for Jack Spade

Q: My legs are shorter than my torso, and I’m not a skinny-jeans guy, help!—Michael Freidson, editor in chief of TONY
A: THECAST (119 Ludlow St between Delancey and Rivington Sts, 212-228-2020) in the Lower East Side has a great relaxed-fit jean called the Lax Cut, or Bblessing (181 Orchard St between E Houston and Stanton Sts, 212-378-8005) has lots of denim as well. If the length is too long, hit up one of the local neighborhood tailors either on Rivington Street or Orchard Street to snip and hem them for you. It will cost less than $5 and you’re in and out in under 15 minutes!—Chuck Guarino
A: Personally, I’ve always been a fan of the denim bar at Barneys (660 Madison Ave between 60th and 61st Sts, 212-826-8900). They have a ton of different brands, and quite honestly, the only way to find the right pair is to just roll your sleeves up, grab 20 pairs and try them all on. Almost all brands have different sizing parameters, so you need to test them all; trust me, even experts like me have to do it too. If you still can’t find any that work for you, Earnest Sewn in the Meatpacking District (821 Washington St between Gansevoort St and Little W 12th St, 212-242-3414) custom makes jeans so they’ll fit any off proportions you have.—Kevin Lennox, freelance fashion stylist (sirlennox.com)
